just... [06 Feb 2012|11:13pm]
...keeping things ticking over... building up sandcastles against the day this journal will get deleted!

apropos of my layout, the wonderful folks at mourir_libre (whoever they are..!) at are at it again, or were last year.

The Move [04 Jul 2008|02:40pm]

Hello! I'm still here! But I won't be for much longer...

Yes, I am changing journals! I can now be found at parasolprincess, a basic account I cunningly got for other purposes some years ago. (I'm still Jesta, though!) I haven't added friends or communities or anything yet. Feel free to pre empt me if you want! XD

Why? Um. Because I'm 21. And because I haven't posted in ages. Those are actually my reasons although there's a bit more behind both of them... I know this is a bit of grand gesture, but, hey, I've never done it before!

I think I'll leave this journal online, because of the funny fandom bits and stuff... and because... I don't know... - however odd and awkward I find the myself-of-years-gone-by, some of you guys (or your past selves) liked her for some reason... Which I'm grateful for! I may take some of the remaining truly embarrassing bits down though, if I can be bothered.

Also, the layout will stay up here for perpetuity because 1. it was my birthday present preciouss! from Helen!! and 2. Yaay, Camille Desmoulins! I guess I'll use S2 for the New Journal though, so I can have tags etcetera.

Also, I will try to actually update the New Journal (more than) once in a while. This will take some doing.

Aaaand because I haven't done a meme in years (...hm, this is bad thing? ^^) and because, here, you Learn About Me... and because I just spent ages doing this instead of going to bed it's not going to waste... Yoinked from la Lina.

holiday review! [19 Apr 2008|01:07am]
[ mood | calm ]

Whew... OK, so for the first time in a long time I've actually done all the work that I had to do over the a holiday :)

I've even got lots of auditions for the radio play coming in -- though still nowhere near enough guys, unfortunately.

And I've actually written something like eighteen and a half minutes of music over the last three weeks.

And today I saw Rachel! - and we had coffee and cake, and then lunch, and then 50p Ben's Cookies! ...We also walked around a lot! ^^;; AND best of all we went to what's now called Hands-On or Science Oxford but what used to be CuriOXity, the most wonderful fun fun fun science museum/room with stuff to do out of our childhoods. And it was just we remembered and just as good! (Though it was worrying that the putting-the-cube-together thing was quite so challenging at our age...)

And I've just had a bath and now I'm drying off and writing this. And it is admittedly quite late...

So... I think one of the better holidays of uni in summation... did work; also saw people (Dan and Matthew, Sez, ZZ and Jo, Rachel), went to London, saw the Lion King, even got some shopping in, discovered Quantum Leap (XD), saw a couple films, and spent time hanging out with parents ^^ Twas good.

And now... hm, I'm not particularly keen to go back to Bristol because a) I like it here and I shall miss Bonnie and b) woooooork and streeeeeeess and stuff encroach. Ho hum.

Bonniiiiiieeee~ is soo cute.

^^ [16 Apr 2008|06:04pm]
My parents both like my atonal-y crash smashy orchestra music ^_^ Hee. Or, anyway, they say they do, which is nice :) And it's not really that atonal. Tis just that I'd have difficulty saying what key it's in most of the time... Schoenberg liked to say 'pan tonal', didja know? According to Richard Fawkes.

Anyway, longer update!

Yesterday: trip to London with my mum! (for no reason other than its the holidays, and I've been stuck in my room the entire time!)
sdfkjheroijdfgldfgdflksdflkj LION KING!!!!
(oh look, I accidentally typed 'hero' ... is that significant? ^^)
sdfsfksdfjsdfksdfhfds ginormous puppet elephant!!
dfkdfjlkdfgjlkdsfsf dancing people in Can You Feel The Love Tonight!
EEEEEEE Rafiki. Rafiki Rafiki Rafiki!! The woman playing her was just one of the best singers I think I have EVER heard. Plus, the way she acted was hilarious. Eee. Wow. I could listen to her like all day!

Aaaand today I saw ZZ and Jo and Sez for the first time in ONE MILLION YEARS. Yaay~~ Hello, yous!

And on Friday I am seeing Rachel ^___^ This is awesome because I haven't seen her ages, and like every day I kept thinking I should write a big fat letter or something... then my mum reminded me of the existance of my mobile phone... whereupon I found a text from a day ago!

Also in London: bought a loverly silk (!!) dress on mad sale from East in Covent Garden. AND - from the really cool music/movies store on the South Bank - a five-CD-for-£20 dealie (one of the "CD"s was in fact five CDs, hehehe~~) because I figure I need to actually listen to more music. Because 1. being a music student, it's kind of quite shocking the standard repertoire even that I have no idea of... and more importantly 2.quite frequently when I have to listen to some composer or something for work, or come across some music randomly I've found something that I REALLY like. Soo, I'm thinking I should be more active about this. and 3 of course, yay composing inspiration to steal etc!

I now have... (& haven't listened to yet, mainly due to the impossibility of listening to music while trying to write other music..!)
-- Shostakovich Symphony 8. [While looking for the symphony we played in TVYO, I heard a bit of this and I loved the eerie-spooky meandering strings. ...I haven't heard anywhere near all of it though; it is LONG!]
-- Schoenberg: Chamber Symphony No. 2, Die Glückliche Hand, Wind Quarter op 26 [Haven't heard any of these. Have heard OF them! Anyway, seems like a nice selection, and it's conducted and programme-noted by Robert Craft the same guy as my other CD.]
-- Adam de la Halle: Le Jeu de Robin et de Marion as performed by Tonus Peregrinus. [Heeee. Yes, the medieval-musical I did my essay on. ...I did my essay on it BECAUSE I rather liked it! This is a quite funny recording- with the text of the play acted out in modern English, with the old French narrated off to one side at the same time... sounds crazy and... it kind of it, but it's cool.]
-- Carl Orff: Carmina Burana [Because I haven't - consciously - heard it! And I'm told it's the archetypal big choir score stuff that everyone rips off for movie trailers sooo.... ^.~]
-- Aaand a 5CD pack "Symphonies." Stuff by Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Mahler and Dvorak. It's something like my third copy of Dvorak's New World symphony (♥) but other than that..!

Hee.

This is all so very random!

I'm feeling quite chipper now; between times I've been sliiightly majorly stressing about the amount of stuff I have to do and the fact that I still need people for this radio play (although I do have some! yay!) and the fact that so far I'm producing/directing/EVERYTHING it and it's all a bit scary....

Hum! Anyway! Food time I think!

New discovery!! [16 Apr 2008|05:20pm]
Eeeeeeeeee. I've thought a couple times that the story of King David would make a wonderfully dramatic (not to mention tragic!) film/play/musical/something...

We-ell....! Alan Menken and Tim Rice did it a while back!! What's even better is that since it's so ridiculously out of print of hard to find, the cast album is downloadable here!!!

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!! Check.it.out. Soo good!

...Now I'm just really annoyed that the other like 70% of the numbers aren't anywhere :( Wooooe.

Hee, wow, looks like Amazon are holding what is essentially a Harry Potter drabble contest -- grand prize being a weekend with The Tales of Beedle the Bard!

Open to Muggles ages 13 and older in 24 countries, the Beedle the Bard Ballad Writing Contest challenges you to creatively answer one of the following three questions in 100 words or less:
• What songs do wizards use to celebrate birthdays?
• What sports do wizards play besides Quidditch?
• What have you learned from the Harry Potter series that you use in everyday life?

An Amazon.com committee will select 10 semi-finalist submissions (based on creativity and writing style) from each of two age categories: 13-17 and 18-and-over.

See? Drabbles!

Suqueee!
We just watched Enchanted ^__^ (Finally!) Total brilliance! It is made of win.

Also, according to the "Coming Sooooon!"s, they're making... 1. a prequel to The Little Mermaid and 2. a film called Tinkerbell!!

Now, bear with me; yes, both of these are very, very sweatdrop-inducing. But! They are 2D animation! It still exists!!! (The like 5 minutes at the start and the end of Enchanted made me so very happy!) And they probably have songs. And, anyway, Disney music!! Which, you know, got me thinking. (ED: OK, Tinkerbell isn't animated animated. ....and it's VERY sweatdrop-inducing, GAH!)

*plots*

I just need to work very very quickly now... Which entails getting enough sleep. Which I shall now embark on. I'm going to go to bed and read - guess what? - The Long Patrol!! Squeeeee. Yay, Redwall. (I've pretty much forgotten what happens in most of them -- with notable exceptions: Mariel of Redwall I think I could still give you a decent plot outline. And Mossflower. Martin The Warrior. (*sob*) But yes ^^ Much fun!)

[ mood | insaaaaane! ]

Bzzwwzzzzz! Braaaaain aaaaache!! I've been thinking really hard about this Hollow Men music thing and it is seriously making my head hurt~~~~ *eyeroll* & then I start playing the keyboard and writing and it's noooot the whole thing at allllll.

.....ok never mind me XDD I've been blithering on about all this stuff to my family over dinner and it didn't make sense then either. This, as I said, is why I need to WRITE this thing rather than talk about.

.............but it's haaaard!

ok. I need to think some more now ...

Also.. [05 Apr 2008|11:41pm]
Am currently loving The Space Trilogy (or the Cosmic Trilogy or Planets or Ransom or whatever these books are really called!) Have been getting them on iTunes and listening while I do music etc! ^^ V. good. I read Out of the Silent Planet years ago at school and remember reeeally getting into it then even though it was maybe little bit hard going for me. I really liked it this time round. And Perelandra, which I'd never read was just mind-blowing. Seriously. ...I must get Dan to read these, for the Tolkein references quite apart from anything else!!

...I shall just share one amoose and apropos of nothing much quote from That Hideous Strength which I've just lately started.....

Dr. Dimble looked out of the window. "There is my dullest pupil just ringing the bell," he said. "I must go to the study, and listen to an essay on Swift beginning, 'Swift was born.'"

Heehee. Don't start essays like that.

*rolls eyes* ...Soo, having not to do harmony any more, for some reason I completely voluntarily write a chorale ^^

Anyway, yees, am also not working v. hard on my school composition. Sigh sigh. Tis always hard to start work (again).

ps. yesterday I completely finished (a draft of) my radio play script :) :) :) Finally!

This girl should be listened to..! [18 Mar 2008|02:46pm]
My latest musical discovery! Kate Akhurst

There's four songs on myspace, I like all of them, specially maybe Crazy On That Stuff cos it's so poppy and bouncy. And also You're Welcome... and.. yeah, all of them. Probably my very favourite though is War in Your Warning which is only on the album. (Which I snagged off iTunes.) It's just... well, too short for one thing!! I love how a lot of the songs can start sounding like one thing or mood and switch to something quite different in the middle. ...OK, this sounds like it wouldn't work, but it really does.

I'm very bad at explaining why I like music buuuut I thought I should give it a go here because this girl should be all over the radio seeeriously :) Cos I really like my pure pop even with "RnB leanings" (which I don't think is something I'd... think I like... but if it's like this then I do!) and I love the shiny production. So I dunno if you'll like this music, but I do and also I think it's the best kind of mainstream-acceptable stuff that people should be yelling along to at parties.

She's one of those people like Gwen Stefani in No Doubt that tackles the fiddly difficult emotions like dissatisfaction very well. (Stylistically there are bits a little reminiscent of No Doubt too, like the ska-pop brass and some of the fun vocal technique~ Not a bad thing at all. And still very her own thing.)

-

My not-quite-so-recent and more famous musical discovery is F.I.R. Awesome, awesome, quite crazy Taiwanese band. Quite famous for a song called "Lydia" which is just lovely. Again, this makes me want to have a go with producing because look how cool it can be..! I've just got one album and even on that, the all-over-the-place genre references are fab. It's like... pop/rock/baroque-rock (according to wikipedia, seriously! And anyway, I can totally hear that!) with the odd twist of metal (but I like it, ok?), traditional Chinese, ... and there are bagpipes (Uillelian pipes?) on one absolutely beautiful track.

Yaaay music.

...Heee, yeh, soo I guess that's an upside of doing this essay -- I can actually listen to music sometimes while I work again!!

What's In The Box? [10 Mar 2008|04:46pm]
The short film I did music for last week ^_^ It is here!

It's a film by my friend Haruka for a competition about why it's important to learn languages. Tis sooo cute ^_^ And a little surreal! The music is... well, cute too~ (And basically done in two nights flat.)

Also, woe and alas, Robin Hood is all over now :( It was really, really fantastic, especially the last night when 1. I didn't almost fall over jumping onto stage for Uptown Girl (...3 inch heels have a downside, you know!), 2. we didn't mess up Sisters and 3. the audience were the best yet, 4. there were some great ad libs, including one by yours truly XD Fun fun fun fun. Photos maybe forthcoming... (EDIT: oh yes, there are some on facebook!)

Now, I guess, back to work ^^ etcetera.

(1 stormed the bastille | aux armes!)

Amid the Busy... [29 Feb 2008|03:47pm]
Two amusing things:

1. The number of Red Riding Hood songs there are! (...iTunes store is fun...) From this which is apparently a bit of a classic and has been covered a lot (and is a lot of fun!) to the one on this cd which amuses me particularly...

They call her a hood, little Miss Red
Cos of the scarf she wears on her head
She's such a sweet girl, but don't treat her harshly
Like that wolf did who's pushing up parsley

...

Up sprang the wolf all ferocious and fierce
On his head granny's nightcap, in his paw was her purse
"Cowabunga!" cried Red, and leapt in the fray...
He crossed the wrong girl, and now he would pay.

...etc~

2. I got my hair cut today. At a barber's. XD It cost... LESS THAN HALF of what I'd pay most other places. Only a little more than half of what it cost at Supercuts, in fact. Haha. Is the end of Jesta's epic quest for a reasonably priced haircut?? (Any advance on £12.50 wash/cut/style? Other than DIY, free, obviously, cos I've decided I should probably resist any self-hair-cutting urges I get for the time being at least!)

Anyway, TODAY, mes parents and James are coming from Oxford any time now! Yay! ...Still no work, yay ^^; But I did mail Jonathan man about the TWO potential recording engagements this week, so that's, like, productive, right?

Whoa... [12 Feb 2008|11:17am]
So, I'm going through the beginning of my half-finished draft of Charlotte Doyle for my radio play type thing, and making a list of all the sound effects I will need to find/record. THERE ARE A LOT!! (Doesn't help that practically the entire thing is set on a ship somewhere in the Atlantic ^^;)

But anyway..... tis kind of fun to think about though. this is amusing -- list of film sound clichés!

Sisters are doin' it for themselves... [04 Feb 2008|11:11am]
